All tapestries are hand woven. The basic structure comprises a taut (vertical) warp, through which the coloured (horizontal) weft yarns are woven. The weft completely covers the warp threads resulting in only the coloured yarn being seen when complete.
A drawn 'cartoon' sits behind the warp and is used as a guide for the precise placement of the coloured weft. The image grows millimetre by millimetre. Small bundles (butterflies) of coloured weft are hand threaded alternately, in front and behind, the taut vertical warp and compacted down. Gradually the tapestry is built, by the precise positioning of this dense coloured weft, as it completely covers the warp.
Wool, mohair, linen, silk and cotton yarns are used for this meticulous process ensuring intense colour.
